Fix the WSIB

Starting January 1st, 2013, the WSIB requires independent contractors and operators to pay WSIB coverage even though most have cheaper and better insurance.

WHEREAS beginning 1 January 2013 WSIB was expanded to include groups of employers
and principals who had previously been exempt from WSIB and had private insurance;
AND WHEREAS this new financial burden does nothing to improve worker safety and
only drives up the cost of doing business in Ontario;
WE the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows: To repeal the statutory obligations created by Bill 119

    I have been paying WSIB for many years as a small business owner and can get easily get better coverage for my workers wether they are working or at play for a fraction of the cost that I am paying for WSIB. I believe in having coverage for my workers, but just like auto insurance no one organization be it public or private should control such a large sector of a industry. Fair competition is good in any market place, but with this business being soo profitable, it’s understandable that they would not want anyone else to compete against. Just like the LCBO. I am currently paying close to $16 dollars on every hundred in WSIB premiums to the goverment. Factor in Hst of $13% on all material and fuel that we purchase for each job, payroll source deductions, CPP, Federal and Provincial Taxes, its honestly amazing how one stays in business. The last time I checked, hospitals were not allowed to operate privately for profit under the act. When a worker injures himself and requires medical treatment the first thing the hospital administers do is ask you if the injury occured on the job site or on your private time. The reason for this is so they can charge WSIB for all the medical treatments that the hospital proformed. I had a worker that injured his knee and went to a hopital for a examination. WSIB was charged over $5000 dollars for a series of tests the hospital preformed over a few hour period. Now this is a profitable business my friend. I was under the impression that health care was free. This caused my rate to increase for 3 years by about 10% each year. I can under stand why the rates are so high. Go on and have a look at the sunshine list. There’s basic supervisors making over $150’000 a year. It’s amazing how much these people make for what little they do.Good luck to you and your staff for the battles you fight for us. Keep fighting the good fight.

    All the best.

    If this was all about safety ,then why was this not implemented when WSIB first started . If each individual worker was held responsible to pay their own coverage, you would not see the amount of injury claims that are happening. Workers would pay more attention to not getting hurt because their premium would increase . Bill 119 has caused a lot of strain on small business ,especially here in Ottawa where we have to deal with cross the border contractors .This Government does not want to understand the impact this Bill is having on small business . I voiced my opinion’s and concerns to WSIB and the Government ,what did I get in return, a WSIB Audit . This was how they dealt with my concerns

    This Bill is nothing more than another tax grab and a make work project for WSIB staffers. These people, and it seems the government as well, have no concept of reality and what it takes to run a business and succeed at it. As a sole proprietor, I’m now faced with paying a ridiculous amount to the WSIB for insurance which I’ll never use. I look at it as a pay cut and wonder how these government workers would feel if I took $400 per month out of their pockets for something similar? Maybe call it a small business tax (SBT for short) which comes directly to us. I’m just too small and don’t have a union behind me to implement this SBT plan. Seriously though, lets get this Bill repealed today and allow us small business people to do what we do best, run our economy!
