Hydro Facts - Ontario Most Expensive in Canada

The rates and graph have now been updated for all jurisdictions to reflect the prices as of May 1st 2016.

Have you had enough of escalating electricity rates, outrageous delivery, regulatory and debt charges, billing mistakes, and excuses from Hydro One and the Wynne Government?

Rising costs and all these extra charges have made Ontario the most expensive jurisdiction for electricity in Canada. I have put together this fact comparison with the other provinces- clearly this government's energy policies are bankrupting us.

*Alberta was left out of the comparisons due to multiple utilities operating throughout the province on different systems*

Take a look at this chart demonstrating the all-in-cost for rural resident's monthly billing across Canada.

Here's the detailed breakdown of the rates from the chart above:

Hey Randy, thanks for this and thanks for caring about this. Too few do. They won’t until some rural working poor family is asphyxiated some cold winter trying to use a cheaper but dangerous heat source for their home. What is troubling me now also is the fact that this provincial government is now starting to make noise about forcing people off of natural gas. Which would force them to use all electric. Which would fill their coffers and pockets in keeping their friends rich beyond anyone’s imagination. Keep up the good work Randy.

Matt, I was reading this yesterday this is outrageous we are being robbed in daylight savings time… My rate was very high during off peak so I know I’m being ripped off.

I am already planning for a propane generator . I already have a backup on (14kw) , but it is not designed to run 24/7 . I am planning to get a 20kw liquid cooled hopefully I can find it . I could use the cooling to also heat my house in the winter . My switching point is when Hydro is $400+ per month . I figure at the current way our government runs things this should happen within a year.
Down side the xxxxxx will then start raising the carbon tax .
As a retire leaving the providence is also an option .

3rd world countries are way ahead of Ontario . Even the corruption exist in the 3rd world but not as bad as this Ontario Government !!

Yes and the biggest reason for this is because we split Ontario Hydro into OPG and various providers under the Harris government. Since that time the province has been paying even more for our power than we as individuals have. Sometimes we even pay OPG not to generate power. Not a creation of the Liberals, a situation they inherited from the Conservatives.
The free market is not a place for public utilities.
I’d like to vote the Liberals out on this issue, but I’d like to see a legitimate solution to the problem that doesn’t come at the expense of the public purse. Meaning, don’t cut other programs to finance a greedy power generator, restructure the whole thing to serve the public instead of private interests.

Doh …. make that UNELECTABLE LEADERS …. If you keep voting for PC Leader … who are UNELECTABLE, then we are stuck with WYNNE!!!

The first part of the solution is obvious Randy Hillier. STOP ELECTINGUNELECTED LEADERS — to the PC party. Elliott would have killed Wynne in the election. Brown …. not so sure.

Who voted Wynne……not me. Send the BC premier over to Ontario because they obviously know a lot more about running things.

Wynne don’t sell Hydro One to solve your screw ups. Quit hurting the common people!

Nafta was to prevent dumping and selling heavily subsidized commodities to the partners, so what is it when we sell/ dump hydro that is heavily subsidizing wind and solar.

Jeff has a good valid question to Randy, what needs to be done to “fix it”. What can we do to help?
I’ll bet there is a professor out there somewhere who knows how to clean up the mess

What can we do to change it Amy? I wish I had the solution
At that level of corruption it takes money, lots of money and I’m not in that snack bracket

When the deceit and deception is intentional, it is criminal. Bring back lynching for treason.
Selling our Hydro, I expect my cheque!

How do we impeach her? She’s obviously incapable or incompetent to lead, as a public servant she should be fired. I personally would like to see her tarred and feathered and run out of the province. Charelli should be leading the protest, instead of being Wynnes spineless bitch, anything for a pension eh Bob! SHAMEFUL!

We had our hydro disconnected after crazy bills of over 2500 a month , we have received bills since from hydro one and we don’t even have hydro running in to the house . They are straight up crooks

hydro one is a major threat for ontario poverty, with that bunch of incompetence liberals

While I commend you for your stance on Hydro, the question that needs to be asked is – how do you plan on fixing it? It’s easy to say “well, the system is broken” (which I think everyone in Ontario will agree, it’s broken) but nobody has put a plan in place on how to fix it. So, the floor is yours Mr. Hillier – how would you fix the Hydro system in this province?

Once again showing that Quebec is the best place to live in Canada..Income tax might be lower in Ontario for a middle class family, but how much do you have to save on that to pay the ridicoulous Hydro costs and combine that with the out of control car insurance rates (I pay $150 a year whilst my Ontario colleague pays over $2,000 for the same kind of coverage and type of car!..for a family of three cars that almost $6,000 more a year!…Most expensive electricity in NA and the most expensive auto insurance…I think I’ll stay in Quebec, (where it’s also one of the places with the cheapest real estate within a half hours drive of a major city, in the world!) Vive le Quebec!

Currently in South Stormont, Rural SDG, Chesterville, Finch, Morewood, Winchester, there is a petition of 36, 000 individuals regarding the absolute greed which is hitting everyone in these
Locations, myself being one of them, the smart meters are faulty, I have had this digital masterpiece replaced several times and it has been at fault, my hydro has tripled in the last year.
I am on a fixed income with no possible way to catch up on a three month accumulated bill of $ 1979.65, think l am going to purchase or lease a diesel-powered generator, which will run the whole
Household of $10 a day versus my last bill of $ 692.00, they can charge someone else the delivery charges, the generator would pay for itself in 5 years, and l would be off the grid.

I get charged 196 or more a month for delivery to a rural single family home. I am a single parent and my usage is less then 200. It’s disgusting to think I have had to work overtime when i can just to keep my lights on..This is insane and Hydro One claims owe it’s a delivery charge and maintaence fee> I have never seen any damn delivery truck..criminals should be banned

This is a very sad article, posted by yet another resident of Ontario with very poor grammar. If you are going to pretend that you are devoted to some cause, at least have someone proof read your post. Like many in our province, you have managed to waste a great deal of your time pointing out the obvious. Where is your solution? A mere child can point out the obvious, often better than most adults. It’s the solution, or at least an attempt at a solution that gets people’s interest. Offer a real phone number which Ontario residents can call to speak their mind. If hundreds of thousands of Ontario residents call, someone might listen.
Complaining amongst yourselves will solve nothing, waste everyone’s time, make you look uneducated and in the end, help your government feel even more confident that they can do what ever they please and never be held accountable.
Offer a bold solution! People will hopefully jump at the opportunity to be part of your “Solution”!
