Press Release: Parents Still Waiting For Autism Program

Minister Heading to the ‘Political Hall of Shame’

26 November 2019

(QUEEN’S PARK) Today, Lanark–Frontenac–Kingston Independent MPP Randy Hillier questioned the Minister of Children, Community and Social Services about the Government’s failure to provide funding to families in need of autism services.

“The Minister’s dithering will surely have him in the ‘Political Hall of Shame’ as tens of thousands of families are still not a priority,” Hillier stated in his question.

“Rachael Wilcox’ son is a 9 year old boy with autism; his parents are paying out of pocket for his ABA therapy,” Hillier told the House. “They’ve exhausted their savings, and are being forced to dig deeper and deeper into their lines of credit.”

Hillier asked the Minster why families like Rachael Wilcox and her son are being left behind during their dire need. “Rachael heard back from the Ministry; this is what they told her: Their first priority are young children...not 9 year olds like her son. Their second priority are those who have been on the waiting list the longest, not her son who has only been waiting nearly 3 years,” Hillier shared. “3 years is an eternity in a child’s development.”

Mr. Hillier now asks, when will families like Rachael and her son become a priority?
