Referendums are a great compliment to our democracy, however they are called at the behest of the government. My Private Members Bill would give citizens the ability to trigger referendums that the government would then be forced to act on, which would empower our citizens and further strengthen our democracy. To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
Whereas, some of the biggest questions facing this great nation have been decided by referendum, such as the conscription plebiscite of 1942 and the referendum to repeal prohibition;

And Whereas referenda are a great tool that would complement our democracy and empower the electorate by giving them the opportunity to determine the outcome of select policies directly;

And Whereas Bill 126 Referendum Act, 2015 will allow the people of Ontario to trigger a referendum via petition, allowing the electorate the power to hold a referendum on policies of their choosing;

We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
That the Government of Ontario enacts Bill 126, Referendum Act 2015.
