Amherst Island Wind Farm

Amherst Island is a beautiful island in Lake Ontario - and the site of a proposed wind farm development. These inefficient, massively-subsidized wind turbines are being put up without consultation from the residents of Amherst Island.

A Petition to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

Whereas, there is significant evidence that the proposed wind turbine project for Amherst Island will have long term negative consequences for the environment, health and prosperity of Islanders;

And Whereas, the Green Energy Act pays exorbitant subsidies that will benefit a few at significant cost to the many, to create power that is unneeded, and that the majority of residents have expressed their opposition to the project;

We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:

That the Liberal government now respect the will of the residents of Amherst Island, and cancel the contract with Algonquin power immediately.

Please note: Only one person can be associated with a single email address. Individuals who would like to sign the petition, but do not have an email address of their own should send a paper copy of their petition to the following address: Office of Randy Hillier, MPP, Room 207 NW, Queen's Park, 111 Wellesley Street West, Toronto, Ontario M7A1A8

    This would be a huge inconvenience to the residents and to the people driving along the beautiful shore of Lake Ontario. The bird population would suffer along with the residence and create a problem for anyone looking to build or live in the area. NOT a good business decision!!!

    Amherst Island is currently a national cultural heritage treasure, enjoyed and appreciated by people around the world for its natural environment, history and beauty. Of particular importance is its critical role in the North American Migratory Flyway for birds, bats, and butterflies. Amherst Island has a timeless, spiritual quality and sense of place that needs to be protected for future generations. The utterly insensitive construction of a major industrial wind generation plant with 36 × 51-story tall turbines across the entire island would be immoral beyond words. It is unacceptable and unconscionable. If there is one place in the world that wind turbines should and must never be placed – it is Amherst Island.

    I had an uncle killed in the World War standing up for the freedom and democracy of all Canadians. What happened? Was he and all his comrades killed for naught. This issue came into our little community under the table and behind our backs. It has split our lovely little community and the majority has no say in the matter

    PLEASE, PLEASE cancel this contract for Amherst Island, we are unwilling hosts.

    The construction of a wind farm on Amherst Island is a serious error. I own a farm on The Island, I am a large landowner and would prefer that my property makes a more productive contribution to the economy. I am committed to a form of land stewardship that is more productive, effective and environmentally sustainable than through the construction of wind turbines on my property.

    Thank you for organizing this petition. Apart from the potential adverse health effect and decimation of the bird population to put

    those massive wind turbines on Amherst Island and Prince Edward

    Point will truly desecrate the beauty of the area that people have

    enjoyed for generations. I would like to see the area all along the

    Loyalist Parkway and Prince Edward Point declared a protected

    Area like a National Trust so that it will always be there for future

    Generations to enjoy.

    Stop the madness! Wind turbines are not the right solution for Ontario – expensive, inefficient power with significant environmental implications. We don’t want turbines on Amherst Island, we want to go to the bottom of the list as offered by former Premier McGuinty.

    Economically, politically & socially industrial wind turbines are a problem not a solution.

    I’m not opposed to wind power. I’m not opposed to wind power on Amherst Island. I am strongly opposed to the Ontario government’s regulation regarding the minimum distance between wind generators and peoples’ homes. Our government has betrayed us, by allowing wind generators much too close to our homes. We deserve better.

    They need to be at least 2000 meters from any resident! 500 meters is asking for trouble!! Why not put them out in Lake Ontario or scrap the whole thing now.
