Amherst Island Wind Farm

Amherst Island is a beautiful island in Lake Ontario - and the site of a proposed wind farm development. These inefficient, massively-subsidized wind turbines are being put up without consultation from the residents of Amherst Island.

A Petition to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

Whereas, there is significant evidence that the proposed wind turbine project for Amherst Island will have long term negative consequences for the environment, health and prosperity of Islanders;

And Whereas, the Green Energy Act pays exorbitant subsidies that will benefit a few at significant cost to the many, to create power that is unneeded, and that the majority of residents have expressed their opposition to the project;

We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:

That the Liberal government now respect the will of the residents of Amherst Island, and cancel the contract with Algonquin power immediately.

Please note: Only one person can be associated with a single email address. Individuals who would like to sign the petition, but do not have an email address of their own should send a paper copy of their petition to the following address: Office of Randy Hillier, MPP, Room 207 NW, Queen's Park, 111 Wellesley Street West, Toronto, Ontario M7A1A8

    Sent to Greater Napanee Town Council Sept 2013

    The Case against Wind Turbines in L&A

    I’m communicating this to you under the urging of a circular put about by The Concerned Residents of the Town of Greater Napanee. I do so further as a citizen of Ontario. The Liberal Government’s “Green Plan” has been an economic and political disaster for Ontario, and we here in Greater Napanee should do our part in attempting to put a stop to it.

    My primary objection to wind turbines is economics. The case for wind turbines (that they’re green) is faulty. They start life with a huge carbon debt (from manufacturing and the requirement for backup power using fossil fuels) that they will not repay, use expensive materials (rare earth metals, high strength steel alloy) that would be better used elsewhere, produce power inefficiently (because wind is unreliable), at a loss (due to taxpayer subsidy of up to $.80 per KWH). Then there’s the reduction in property values (which affects me) that subsequently lowers property tax revenues (which affects you).

    There’s also toxic politics involved here. Urban people seem to have bought in to environmentalism and favour solar and wind power – just not in their back yard. This produced three election victories for the Liberal Party of Ontario, creators of the current policy. So rural folk, a demographic minority who vote largely largely conservative, get the burdens of large wind and solar installations without the psychological benefits that accompany “green” consciousness. We are drowned out by city folk and city politicians. It’s called the tyranny of the majority. All that for the questionable benefit of reducing climate change (we call it weather out here in the countryside), global warming (see how behind the times we are?) and carbon dioxide (better known as plant food).

    There’s a lot of sorrow and buyer’s remorse out there. No need whatsoever for the power, the waste and the aggravation here in Lennox and Addington.

    Please include me on any petitions or updates on anything to do with stopping the incursion of IWTs in our county. I am completely opposed to them.

    Windpower will be the demise and death to everyone and everything on Amherst Island. This will be the biggest boondoggle in the history of Loyalist Township and MUST be STOPPED. Our local Township officials are also allowing this DISASTER to happen.

    All WIND FARMS are ill conceived by a government with no logic between the ears.

    The Amherst Island Wind Farm must not be approved by your so called government. They know not what they are doing.

    These wind farms have a definite effect on human beings – - – - especially on childrens hearing and brain development. If one is exposed to a steady “Whoosh” or “Drone” noise long enough it is common sense it will affect that person.

    If land values have decreased the “assessment” must be reduced in kind.

    There is enough information on the Internet which very clearly states the harm that these wind turbines are causing to human beings, animals, etc.

    Do not go down this route – - – if you do you will change Ontario for the worse.

    My biggest concern about this and other similar projects, beside the detrimental visual & noise results, as well as potential wildlife hazard, is the cost to the taxpayers as a result of too little research and planning, a seemingly legacy of Mr. McGinty and his caucus. We already have an underutilized power generating plant just down the road which is capable of operating efficiently on relatively low cost and abundant natural gas. The Amherst Island project should be terminated unless and until reliable economic and engineering studies have shown that it is viable, not a health hazard, and needed.

    I believe that windmills are harmful to people and wildlife. There are so many studies which have related negative impacts. Until the Federal government study is completed, I think all projects such as this should be place on hold. I also feel that taxpayers should have more say on this decision. In the end, we are paying for it and it is impacting our daily lives.

    Amherst Island is NOT the place for a wind turbine factory for an incredible number of reasons. Anyone who visited the island or listened to the people who live there, who are opposed to making this rural paradise an industrial zone, would immediately understand why. Only the few landowners (under 20) who signed for contracts to have them want them, and now even some of them are sorry they signed the contracts. Even family members of those who signed leases don’t want them!

    If 380+ landowners do not want turbines, will the Liberal government stand behind its word to respect the will of the majority? If so, it needs to cancel the contract with Algonquin for a wind installation on Amherst Island.

    Visited the Amherst Island, what a sight to behold, wind turbine after wind turbine and for what. Haven’t other countries proven it is not cost effective, destroys farmland, lowers home evaluation and detrimental to people’s health. But do the Liberals listen to the experience of others, no, they go ahead and pay .80 a kw to people so they allow turbines on their land but recuperate a fraction of the cost, a kindergarten child would know that doesn’t balance a budget. Taxpayers of Ontario are more and more in debt, unable to enjoy basic luxuries while the Liberals put more debt on our backs. Give me Mr. McGuinty’s credit card and I’ll enjoy the same lifestyle as he and his cronies at their expense, that’s basically what’s happening. No more wind turbines without in depth look into health issues. There should at least be a minimum distance from farmland and residential homes, call a moratorium now.
